It's bound to be the highlight of the session, which will then devolve into the usual bickering we've all come to expect and enjoy.
I mean, one minute you've got the member from, say, Montana reading from the preamble about the need to "insure domestic tranquility." And the next you'll have a fellow member introducing a decidedly untranquil attempt to repeal the health care law.

I think its a perfect history lesson for congress... many in Washington seemed to have forgotten the meaning in the document and the intent of those who drafted it. Sacred document, sacred words. Further, it's being read by Democrats as well as Republicans. Every action these politicians take should be governed by this document.

I think the word you're trying to find is "contend," not content. Those I speak of as being grateful to live in this country would include myself and my son, who is presently serving in the US Military. Why would our gratitude at living a...nd working in this country be misplaced? Are we misinformed? Is life, for us, actually worse than we realize? I never had any idea I had it so bad. Amazing. To place your gratitude with an inanimate document that merely serves as a blueprint for a political system is to misplace your gratitude. To default to a position that America is somehow "the greatest" in a generic, yet quantifiable way is naive. Are you misinformed? Perhaps. I don't know enough about what you believe to be fact nor do I know why you believe as such. You may be perfectly well-informed, yet arrive at a different conclusion than I do. Both are entirely legitimate possibilities.
Why haven't I left? The reasons are myriad. For one, this country suits me for the time being. It's "good enough." Other reasons include language barriers, employment opportunities, and cost of relocation. But just because I live here, I don't automatically declare that it's "the best." There are 6.7 billion people who don't live here... by your logic, they've deemed the US to not be the best. France is best for the French. Nepal is the best for the Nepali. Japan is the best for the Japanese. I ate some pretty good pasta last night... but I dare not declare that it was the best pasta ever... who could conclude such a thing? We do some things good and other things are done better by other countries. It's always going to be that way.See More

How do you quantify that the American system is better than anything else? What exactly do you consider ...to be the "American system?" What, exactly, is better and how do you conclude that? What exactly am I "badmouthing" about anything? What leads you to believe that I am in some sort of agony? I think you are inferring things that have not been explicitly stated. I doubt we'll make much headway on such a nebulous topic... why don't we boil this down to something specific? Easy one. Let's try Freedom of Speech, which is part of the Bill of Rights, companion to the Constitution. We have the freedom to say what we want in this country, at least for the time being. How does that compare to China? Or Russia? ... Or Iran? Mexico? Even Canada, where Political Correctness is enforced by law. What happens in any of these other countries (or many others) when you dare to speak your mind or bad mouth the ruling parties, country leaders or constitution? Unfortunately for your position, the rest of the world is not "china, russia, iran, mexico and canada."--- There are plenty of places on earth where your right to expression is as robust as it is in America, if not more so. In fact, if you ...consider "media" to be a form of speech, there are places that put the US to shame. Consider the bruhaha over wikileaks, for example... we had elected officials from both parties in the US calling for Assange's arrest and execution... EXECUTION. Simply for making printed text available to anyone who wants to read it. I don't have time to check on which country is which, but I believe Finland has determined broadband access at a minimum of 1mbps is a basic right... that Fins have a right by virtue of being in Finland to have access to the sum of the world's digital data. South American broadcast standards make the US airwaves look like the church-lady's public access channel. There are many civilized locations around the world where people have "freedom of speech..." in addition to freedom of assembly and right to petition their government... the difference is, if you look at other countries, their citizens actually utilize those rights. Sure, there were a couple picnics in DC this past year... it doesn't compare with the protests and petitions in places where the population actually believes it can directly affect change.See More

I'd like to see a way to throw the bums out. Though it doesn't always work... in California we threw Gray Davis out of the Governor's office in order to vote Arnold in... and we're still paying the terrible price for that one...

Better standard of living - Norway, new Zealand, Australia (according to the human development index 2010 report). Personal freedom? By what metric? What freedom would I give up by virtue of being norwegian? As far as aesthetics? That's not... really quantifiable, is it? National defense? How about not being so provocative as to need a military bigger than the next 10 combined? Health care? There are at least 30 countries ahead of us there... Economy? We aren't number one in GDP per capita, income per capita, income distribution, or leisure time per capita. Fuel? Some places actually have good public transportation... But Kuwait has high per capita income AND cheaper gas. Freedom of speech, thought and religion? Most of the low countries beat us on that as I said earlier. Entertainment is too subjective. All I need is an Internet connection and a place to grow tomatoes (and access to scotch) and I'm good. So, of your list, we are "best" in exactly one measurement: we have the biggest army on earth.
